2011 Regatta Report
With interesting weather forecasts, the 21st annual Sussex-Basin Yacht Club regatta was always going to be an interesting event, predictions turned to reality and some challenging sailing conditions faced the almost forty entrants for the two day event.
Entrants broken up into three divisions comprised yachts and crews who had travelled from as far as Queanbeyan to Lake Macquarie, the Illawarra and Sydney, Camden and Bowral joined a great contingent of local boats made up the spectacular fleet to take on the Basin Chase passage race on Saturday and outside course triangles on Sunday.
Westerly winds with some solid 20knot plus gusts and searing heat met the boats on Saturday, testing helmsperson skills and crew tenacity as the wind increased then decreased on two occasions. As the wind speed dropped it lulled many crews to shake out the reef in their mail sail – on reflection a decision not enjoyed by many as the westerlies, as they do, increased and the gusts returned.
Action aplenty, the wind havoc caused one broken mast, a broken rudder and two man overboard incidents – no damage to the sailors but a couple of boats worse for wear at the end of the day.
Division one Saturday (corrected time CBH results) went to Predator, Robert Browns Spider 22 from Arcadia Vale, 2nd to Jim Curry's Rosstered off (Ross 780) from Figtree and local boat, the Arnolds Southern Cross (Ross 780) 3rd.
Division two, 1st Saturday was Todd Curry's Tranquillity, 2nd Frou Frou – Trevor Dunn and the crew from Wollongong and 3rd John Drummonds Bay Blues, SIBYC.
Third Division went to Ann and Bob Bower of Thirroul on Bosun, 2nd to Greg and Rhonda Brown of the local club on Fly Navy Too and 3rd also locals, the Finlayson's Serendipity.
Sundays forecast promised a break from the heat, the southerly kicked in around 9.30am and by the race start at 11am it was blowing a steady 17 to 20 knots. The number of boats in the fleet depleted as the wind increased, the boats got away on time in building breeze – some five minutes after the start 25knots plus was clocked.
Several more boats sought the safety of shore, those remaining actually seemed to enjoy the cold, wet and windy conditions.
Division one had a win again to the Predator crew, Incy Wincy, another Spider 22, Phil Budden from the Wangi Club was very happy with a 2nd and 3rd to another local boat, Glen McIndoe's Lowana.
Division two a 1st to Trevor and the Frou Frou boys, Bay Blues had a 2nd and 3rd went to Ol 55, Peter Browns Magnum from Shellharbour.
Not many finishers in Division three but the day went to a very happy skipper Steve Miller and crew on another local boat, Backchat, a Benetau 235, 2nd to the consistent Bosun and 3rd to locals the Browns on Fly Navy Too.
The overall place prizes went to Bob and Ann Bower on Bosun 1st, Trevor Dunn and the boys on Frou Frou 2nd – best placed local boat was Fly Navy too 3rd, Predator 4th, Bay Blues 5th, Lowana 6th and Backchat 7th.
A huge effort by many volunteers on shore recorders, committee boats, course layers and photographers was very much appreciated by all who enjoyed the two day regatta.
A very successful weekend, the sailing sensational, the social aspect jovial and many smiling faces meant very happy sailors!
This Saturday's event will be on the inside course with a scratch start from 1pm.
